A dryer supplies all three on purpose. It makes heat to dry your clothes and moves a large volume of air to carry the moisture away. The one part nobody thinks about is the fuel.

Lint is the fuel

Lint is not trash. It is millions of tiny cotton and fabric fibers, and those fibers are thin, dry, and quick to burn. Firestarter products sold in stores are basically compressed lint. Inside a dryer, that same material sits packed close to a heat source.

The lint you never see

Your lint screen catches only about three quarters of the lint a load produces. The rest slips past the screen and settles inside the exhaust duct, the long channel that carries air from the dryer to the vent outside. That hidden layer grows thicker every year, and most people never look at it.

How a clogged duct starts a fire

When the duct clogs, hot air cannot escape. The trapped heat forces the dryer to run hotter and longer, and now the machine has rising heat, plenty of air, and a lining of dry lint. That completes the fire triangle. A dryer that has slowly started taking longer to finish a load is often showing the first sign of this buildup.

The three-step fix

The prevention is simple and cheap. Clean the lint screen after every single load. Have the exhaust duct cleaned about once a year, and more often if drying has been taking longer than it used to. And check that the flap on the outside vent actually opens when the dryer runs, so the lint and damp air have somewhere to go.
